Background

My background has been in primary education, teaching across all key stages for over 25 years, with a special interest in language and SEN. I am the parent of a dyslexic child and as a result of this was motivated to train as a specialist teacher and assessor. After qualifying I worked for a number of years part- time as a specialist teacher and assessor with Dyslexia Action as well as continuing to teach in school . I found this dual role very useful, as the specialist knowledge greatly informed my classroom teaching and special needs role, allowing me to develop a much deeper understanding of how dyslexic learners need to be supported in the classroom and what strategies work best for them. Similarly this role in school guided my specialist teaching with an understanding of what dyslexic learners need in order to progress well in school.

For the last five years as a former Dyslexia Action Principal and Area Manager  I have developed my role as a consultant, advising and training Senco’s and teachers in dyslexia awareness; how best to support learners with specific learning differences and what are the best resources and interventions available. This has been across all age ranges from primary through secondary to post 16 settings.
