Background

I began my career as a teacher in 2002, working in schools in Leeds and Bradford until 2014, mainly in Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1. During this time, I pursued my interest in Special Educational Needs, achieving a Postgraduate Certificate in Provision for Children with Developmental Disorders (Dyslexia, Developmental Coordination Disorder, Autism and ADHD), converting this into an MA in Special Educational Needs in 2015. At this time, I began teaching in a Resourced Provision for pupils with dyslexia in a mainstream secondary school in Leeds, taking over the management of this in 2018. In this role, I was responsible for the teaching and day-to-day running of the base, developing dyslexia-friendly Quality First Teaching throughout the secondary campus, and developing dyslexia provision in the primary campus. Alongside this role, I have also been Assistant SENCo in the school, with responsibility for Key Stage 4 access coordination and assessment. I also have experience in supporting students with dyscalculia and other numeracy difficulties and am keen to continue to offer support in this area.

I believe that every child has the capacity to learn and I know the importance of positive relationships and understanding every child’s unique profile in unlocking their potential and enabling them to thrive. I use a multisensory, cumulative approach in all of my teaching with opportunities for repetition and overlearning to consolidate all learning that takes place. It is a privilege to be a specialist teacher and extremely rewarding to see the progress that pupils make in their literacy and numeracy development, and the positive impact this has on their engagement in learning and on their self-esteem and wellbeing.

How I can help

I can provide hourly specialist literacy teaching sessions on Monday and Wednesday afternoons, either at St. Matthew’s C of E Primary School or in local schools (by agreement with the school). I would consider tuition in pupils’ homes, depending on the location and times available. If you would like to get in touch, please email me at anna@dayonline.org.uk I look forward to hearing from you and being a part of your child’s journey.
